January 2021 – School Closure

05 Jan 2021 | BY leekhigh

Dear Parents and Carers

January 2021 – School Closure

I hope that you and your families are well.

As you will be aware, yesterday evening the Prime Minister announced a national lockdown in England. I regret to say that, as a result of this announcement, Leek High School will be closed to students for at least the remainder of this half-term. School will re-open fully as soon as we are told that we can.

As per the previous letter about January reopening, children of critical workers and those identified as vulnerable can still attend school. If you believe that your child falls into one of these categories and will be coming in to school, please email lhs.office@ttlt.org.uk or, alternatively, ring on 01538 225050.

Remote Learning plans remain as they were for this week and will continue throughout this half-term. Tasks and resources can be accessed on the school network through remote logon. There will be regular webinar lessons in all subjects so that students can have direct online instruction from and contact with their teachers. Your child should check their school email account at the start of every day for instructions about work and webinar invitations from teachers. Form Tutors may also contact students via email or telephone. If your child has any problems accessing remote learning please contact the school straight away.

It is important to stress that behaviour for webinar lessons should be of the highest standards. Students who disrupt the learning of others or act inappropriately will be removed from webinar lessons and may not be invited to future sessions.

The Prime Minister also announced yesterday that GCSE and A Level examinations will not go ahead as planned this summer, and that alternative arrangements will be put in place. At the time of writing, I have no further information on how students will be assessed or graded. It is vital, therefore, that Year 11 and Year 13 students continue to work hard and complete all work set by their teachers. It is possible that some of this work might be used to support the awarding of teacher assessed grades.

BTEC and other vocational examinations scheduled for the beginning of this term are proceeding as normal. The students involved have been contacted by their teachers; though please get in touch should you have any questions.

Please be assured that, whatever the nature of the assessment and grading systems this summer, our aim will be to support our students in achieving the best possible outcomes and take the next steps in their education. As soon as more information is published I will, of course, share this with you.

As a school we play a role in not only educating students but also in safeguarding them. We want to make sure that our safeguarding responsibilities are maintained during this closure and are putting in place a programme of regular phone calls for our most vulnerable students and families during this time. If you have any immediate safeguarding concerns about a child, where there is an immediate risk of harm, then you must contact Staffordshire Social Services on 0300 111 8010 or the Police on 101. For non-urgent concerns about a Leek High student email the school’s safeguarding team at safeguardingLHS@ttlt.org.uk.

Families currently being supported by Mrs Lee, our Inclusion Manager, who need additional support during the closure can make contact by emailing plee@ttlt.org.uk. Other sources of support available to families during the school closures are attached to this letter.

There are also some students who are seeing Miss Brookes, the school counsellor, who may need her support during the school closure. These students can contact her using the email address clairebrookes@hotmail.com. Miss Brookes can provide phone and online support during the closure but cannot hold face-toface meetings with students.

Students referred to the school’s NHS Mental Health Practitioner team will continue to receive phone and online support. Information and advice about mental health and wellbeing can be found at www.combinedwellbeing.org.uk.

With the closure of schools, our plans for rolling out Lateral Flow Tests for all students and staff have been put on hold. In order to prepare ourselves fully for reopening, we will be in touch to seek consent from parents for students to be tested before they return.

We will continue to keep you fully updated with all information received from the Department for Education. Over the coming weeks, information will be shared as usual through the school website, text messages and email.

Thank you again for your continued support and understanding.

Yours sincerely,
P. Evans
