Centre Policy for AS/A Levels and GCSEs for Summer 2021

27 Apr 2021 | BY leekhigh

Dear Parents and Carers,

In line with guidance from the Department for Education and the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ), we have now published our Centre Policy for AS/A Levels and GCSEs for Summer 2021. This can be accessed by clicking the following link:  https://lhs.ttlt.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2021/04/LHS-Qualifications-2021-Centre-Policy.pdf

This policy reflects that which has been produced centrally by JCQ and outlines our approach to determining teacher assessed grades this summer. This policy is submitted to JCQ to ensure that our approach is fair, consistent and free from bias.

As communicated previously, students in Years 11 and 13 will be graded based on evidence that that they have completed / are currently completing in class. Our aim is to fully support students to realise their potential and to make the process as clear and transparent as possible.

All student evidence will be completed by Friday 28th May. Following a period of moderation to ensure that grading is fair and consistent; grades will be submitted to the examination boards by the 18th June. For Year 13, students will receive their results on 10th August. For Year 11, students will receive their results on the 12th August.

Students can appeal an individual grade if they choose to do so. In the first instance, this would involve the centre (in this case Leek High School), checking for any administration errors and confirming the grade submitted is accurate. Should the student wish to appeal further, their evidence for the grade in question will be sent to the relevant examination board. The examination board will check the process followed by the centre and determine whether the grade needs to be changed.

Students and parents should be aware that, in the event of an appeal, grades can go up or down. Any changes to grades are final. Staff will be available on site during both results days to assist students and to answer any questions or queries they may have, as well as helping them with their next steps where relevant.

We encourage all Year 11 students to consider applying to stay on and join the Sixth Form. We are confident that the courses, support and quality of teaching we offer rival or exceed that offered by any other institution. The fact that we know the students is always a huge advantage, but arguably this year more than any other. We know how the pandemic has impacted their GCSE courses and are therefore able to tailor the courses they choose in the Sixth Form to ensure we fully account for any gaps or areas of uncertainty.

We are conscious that Year 11 students have not had a typical experience of Key Stage 4 during the last two years, and we’re keen to ensure that their experience in the Sixth Form makes up for that, both in terms of their experiences in the classroom and in the extracurricular opportunities and international visits we are hoping to offer.

Year 11 students who have already applied to join to Sixth Form will be interviewed in the coming weeks. Those who haven’t applied but now want to can collect an application form from Mrs Ackerley.

Should you have any questions regarding any of the above, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Yours sincerely
P. Evans
Headteacher
