COVID Testing & Return Arrangements September 2021

13 Jul 2021 | BY leekhigh

Dear Parents and Carers,

LATERAL FLOW TESTING AND RETURN TO SCHOOL

I hope that you and your families are well.

As you will be aware, we have throughout the year been operating with a number or measures in place to limit or prevent the spread of Covid-19 in school. These have included the use of masks and sanitiser, one-way systems and enhanced cleaning and the use of year group ‘bubbles’ to ensure that students from different cohorts do not mix.

By September 2021 when students return to Leek High and new students join us in Year 9 and Year 12, many of the measures will have been removed nationally as the country proceeds through Step 4 of the roadmap to recovery.

Though we welcome the relaxing of these measures and the chance to return to more conventional school life, we are aware that we will need to remain cautious in order to minimise the risk of new outbreaks and therefore students being absent from school.

As such, we will retain some of the measures we have in place currently into September. ‘Bubbles’ will no longer operate and students/staff will not need to wear masks (they will be optional for those who choose to use them), though we will retain one-way systems inside buildings, separate year group sittings for lunch, and will continue to encourage good hand hygiene.

Another measure that will continue is the use of Lateral Flow Tests to identify asymptomatic cases. Students should continue to test throughout the holiday and we would like to strongly recommend that students complete 2 tests in the days prior to their return in September. This will help to ensure that students do not return to school when potentially contagious. In order to ensure consistency and to help us track completed tests, we would ask that students complete their tests on: Sunday 29th August and Wednesday 1st September.

This will allow all students to return to school on Thursday 2nd September and will remove the need for any sort of staggered or delayed start. Test results, whether positive or negative, should be reported using the online form at: https://forms.office.com/r/neXDWtjc3u. This will allow us to monitor the number of students who have completed two tests and to offer timely advice for anyone who tests positive.

We will issue test kits to students in Years 9, 10 and 12 this week. Students in Year 11 joining us in the Sixth Form will be able to collect a test kit on results day (Thursday 12th August) or from reception this week where kits will be available. Test kits are also available from local pharmacies or can be ordered online at: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapidlateral-flow-tests . Students currently in Year 8 will be issued kits by their current school.

There is, of course, a chance that national or local guidance may change over the course of the summer break, forcing us to alter our plans. If this is the case we will of course write to you to inform you of any changes.

I’d like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks to all students and staff for their efforts this year, and to parents and carers for their ongoing support. It is often said that the ‘true colours’ of a person are seen when they are under the most pressure. If that is indeed true, then I can say that despite all the challenges and difficult times, it’s been a pleasure to see the resilience, commitment and positive attitudes of all those at Leek High shine through over the course of this difficult year.

I hope that you and your families have a good summer. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you have any questions or queries.

Yours sincerely

P. Evans

Headteacher
