Relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education: FAQs

As part of this, all schools are required to consult with parents when developing and reviewing their policies for Relationships and Sex Education, which will inform decisions on when and how certain content is covered.

Effective engagement gives the space and time for parents to input, ask questions, share concerns and for the school to decide the way forward. The school will listen to parents’ views, and then make a reasonable decision as to how they wish to proceed. When, how and what is taught is a decision for the school, and consultation does not provide a parental veto on RSE curriculum content.

The overall aim of relationships and sex education (RSE) at Leek High School is to support the personal and social development of every student, ensuring that they have the ability to accept their own and others’ sexuality in positive ways and to enjoy relationships based on mutual respect and responsibility, free from any abuse. All students have the right to experience a programme of sex education and personal development at a level that is appropriate to their age and physical development that prepares them for adult life. Our RSE programme is wide ranging and inclusive and delivered through a range of activities throughout the year, many of which are delivered by specialist outside agencies.

PSHCE (Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education)

Our PSHCE curriculum challenges students to become creative, successful and happy individuals. We aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge they will need to face current and topical issues and that will allow them to respond with resilience to future change and challenge in their personal lives and the wider world. PSHCE is delivered using a mix of discrete lessons, assemblies and sessions led by specialist external providers. PSHCE curriculum content is contained within our RSE Programme of Study.

Religious Education (RE)

Religious Education at Leek High School is taught in line with Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) guidance. Students are taught to respect each other and contribute to the school and the wider community.

Key Stage 3 (Year 9) students receive teaching of RE in humanities lessons, through assemblies, and within the PSHCE programme.

Key Stage 4 students receive teaching of RE in tutor groups, through assemblies, and within the PSHCE programme.
