Students who have received Free School Meals (FSM) at any point in their school career have consistently lower educational attainment than those who have never been eligible and are therefore considered to be disadvantaged. The Pupil Premium provides additional funding on top of the main funding a school receives to support disadvantaged students to ensure they benefit from the same opportunities as students from less deprived families.

Pupil Premium funding is currently £1075 (2025-26) for every student currently receiving free school meals (or in receipt of free school meals in the past six years), in public care, or whose parents are members of the Armed Forces.

At Leek High School we aim to provide every student the opportunity to meet their full potential. For our disadvantaged students our aims are to:

  • Improve their progress so that it is at least as good as peers of similar prior ability
  • Ensure good punctuality and attendance
  • Promote their emotional and physical health and well-being
  • Support a positive attitude to learning and good behaviour
  • Offer a range of opportunities to raise their aspirations both in school and beyond
  • Offer a curriculum that is challenging yet suited to their individual needs

At Leek High School we recognise that many disadvantaged students have barriers that may impact on their progress in school. When considering the use of Pupil Premium funding to provide extra support for disadvantaged students we always start by looking at how to meet the needs of individuals and overcome these barriers.

The use of Pupil Premium funding for 2025-26 will be evaluated in September 2026.

Applying for Free School Meals

You can claim free school meals if you claim any of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income based Employment and Support Allowance
  • Child tax credit and no working tax credit with a household income of less than £16,190
  • Universal Credit the ‘Guarantee’ element of State Pension Credit
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

Even if you don’t want to take the meals, making a claim will help our school as we will receive some extra funding for each child who is registered. This funding could then be used for: additional support for pupils; school trips; after-school clubs and other enrichment activities.
